See Ben Wilcock Quartet in concert

Music Whakatane is thrilled to present the Ben Wilcock Quartet in partnership with Chamber Music New Zealand. On Saturday 5 August at 4pm at the Church of St George & St John, 30 Domain Road, Whakatāne, pianist and composer Ben Wilcock is joined by some of Aotearoa’s best jazz musicians to showcase his latest album, The River Tethys.

For his nationwide tour, the stellar jazz pianist is joined by Wellington-based artists Tristan Carter on violin, Dan Yeabsley on double bass, and award-winning drummer John Rae. Wilcock’s outfit—the same talented line-up of musicians featured on the studio recording—shines as an ensemble with its dynamic voice and melodic clarity.

Along with Wilcock’s original compositions, expect the quartet’s live performance to include impressive improvisations and refreshing arrangements of jazz standards. Wilcock’s science-fiction inspired River Tethys also features the 1930s show tune Star Eyes, Dizzy Gillespie’s Groovin’ High, and Irish slip jig The Butterfly.

Warner Haldane (Vice-President, Music Whakatane) says: “Music Whakatane likes to offer a variety of musical genres during each season and the Ben Wilcock quartet will be a treat for jazz lovers.”

The Ben Wilcock Quartet delivers a harmonious mix of contemporary takes on jazz standards and original melodies.
