Roses & Thorns for the Soul
Affetto presents another beautiful programme of Baroque music for soprano and chamber ensemble. We have included some famous favourites to delight you, along with less well known gems to underline the concert theme, "Roses and Thorns for the Soul". This music is for celebration and for contemplation, and features guest soprano, Rowena Simpson, with Affetto regulars, Peter Reid (cornetto & Baroque trumpet), Polly Sussex (viols & Baroque cello), and Rachael Griffiths-Hughes (organ & harpsichord). The music of celebration includes Handel's uplifting ‘Let the Bright Seraphim’ and Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary; the music of contemplation and Handel's transcendental ‘Eternal Source of Light Divine’. Other composers featured are Telemann, Keiser, Caldara, Cima and Purcell. The group is playing in Hamilton, Whakatane and Tauranga.
The cello is an original instrument from 1777, the Baroque trumpet is handmade in the Netherlands in 2020, while the sensitive and improvisatory accompaniment of Rachael’s keyboards complement Rowena’s beautiful vocals. Come and be transfixed and transported!
